Ben Folds Five

Chapel Hill, North Carolina piano-rock trio -- Ben Folds on piano and vocals, Robert Sledge on bass, Darren Jessee on drums -- formed in 1994 and built a guitar-free sound around Folds' aggressive, percussive piano playing. Their self-titled 1995 debut, led by the alt-rock radio single "Underground," established the template the band expanded on with 1997's breakout *Whatever and Ever Amen*.
