Marvin Gaye

Washington, D.C.-born singer, songwriter, and producer who spent the 1960s as Motown's most adaptable asset — session drummer, duet partner, and solo hitmaker — before seizing control of his own records with 1971's What's Going On and 1973's Let's Get It On. Died in 1984, one day before his 45th birthday.
