Artist

Rick James

Buffalo-born singer, bassist, and producer who built the "punk-funk" sound of his late-1970s and early-1980s Motown records. "Super Freak," from 1981's Street Songs, became his signature hit and, nine years later, the source of the sampled bassline underneath MC Hammer's "U Can't Touch This" -- a sample that netted James a songwriting credit and a share of Hammer's 1991 Grammy.
