What Mega Monday Is
Every Monday, Song Reviews takes the previous week’s Billboard Hot 100 top 10 and asks the one question a chart position can’t answer on its own: is the popularity deserved? A high rank measures how many people streamed, bought, or requested a song. It doesn’t distinguish between a song that earned that from one that got there some other way — a soundtrack tie-in, a remix feature, a promotional rollout that’s already cooling by the time the chart catches up. Monday’s reviews score every song in the top 10 on the recording itself, and the feature is where the two pictures — chart position and critical judgment — get put next to each other.

Is the Popularity Deserved?
Mostly, yes — which wasn’t a given going in. Nine of this week’s ten songs got a numeric score (Choosin’ Texas stands alone, already argued in full), and the average lands around 7.4, with six of the nine at 7.3 or above. That’s a chart doing its actual job more often than not.
Where it isn’t doing that job, the reason is never a mystery. The three lowest scores this week — “I Knew It, I Knew You” (6.3), “Hate That I Made You Love Me” (6.0), and “Dracula” (6.4) — each has a specific, nameable explanation for its position that has nothing to do with the recording’s own quality: a Disney franchise and a fifteen-year fan base, a coordinated album-week promotional push that was already cooling by the time this chart printed, and roughly half a million TikTok videos built around a groove that critics were shrugging at eleven months before anyone added a verse to it. In every one of those three cases, the review says so directly rather than treating the chart position itself as evidence of quality — because it isn’t.
The other structural story this week is country’s grip on the top of the chart. Four of the top five spots are country or country-adjacent — Ella Langley twice over, Morgan Wallen, and Taylor Swift’s country-pop soundtrack cut — and Langley alone accounts for three of the ten positions on this list (No. 1, a duet at No. 6, and a solo cut at No. 10), across two different credits. That’s not a fluke of one big single; it’s a format currently outproducing everything else on the chart, on a week where the format’s actual quality — Been by Now, I Can’t Love You Anymore, Be Her, and Choosin’ Texas’s own 18-week run — mostly backs up the position it’s holding.
