I Can't Love You Anymore

“I Can’t Love You Anymore” (with Morgan Wallen) is a different kind of Ella Langley duet than “You Look Like You Love Me” — that one was flirtation, this one is exhaustion. Written by Langley, Austin Goodloe, and Joybeth Taylor, produced by Langley, Goodloe, and Ben West, it’s built on a warm, slightly disco-inflected groove that a few outlets accurately compared to Fleetwood Mac — the “’70s-influenced” tag is doing real work here, not just a critic reaching for a reference. The premise is a couple stuck in the specific misery of not being able to quit each other and not being able to actually love each other either, and Langley and Wallen sell that as two people singing past each other rather than to each other, which is the harder, more honest version of a breakup duet to pull off.

It wasn’t on Langley’s Dandelion when the album dropped in April — it arrived two weeks later as a bonus-track single, after the two of them debuted it live on Wallen’s tour, which could easily have played as an afterthought cash-in stapled onto an album that was already a phenomenon. It didn’t need the shortcut. The song is genuinely strong on its own terms — Country Airplay’s No. 1, a real chart peak of its own rather than a coattail ride — and it says something that a bonus track outperforms most artists’ planned lead singles. 7.6/10.
