DMA'S go quieter and fully self-produced for the first time, and the unhurried result is a deliberate choice, not a lesser one.
Worth noting for the record even outside the rock lean: this is the trio’s first fully self-produced song, tracked with Lach Bostock in their own studio in Glebe, Sydney — Tommy O’Dell, Johnny Took, and Matt Mason cutting it themselves rather than handing it to an outside producer. You can hear the difference in how unhurried it is.
Built on a pensive acoustic guitar rather than the band’s usual wall of hooks, “My Baby’s Place” repeats “rewind, rewind” like a mantra, and Mason’s said the verses came out of a genuine back-and-forth between gratitude and destitution. It’s a quieter, more reflective DMA’S than the anthemic version most people know. 7.0/10 — a deliberate choice, not a lesser one.
