Greatest of All Time!MC Lyte's 'Ruffneck' became the first Gold-certified single by a solo female rapper and earned her the first-ever Grammy nomination for one -- six years after she'd already become the first woman to release a solo rap album.
By the time “Ruffneck” came out in May 1993, MC Lyte had already spent six years setting precedents nobody had asked her to set: a debut single at 16, and in 1988, the first solo full-length rap album released by a woman, Lyte as a Rock. “Ruffneck,” the lead single from her fourth album Ain’t No Other, is where the precedent-setting turned into mainstream commercial recognition – it became the first single by a solo female rapper to be certified Gold by the RIAA, and it earned her a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Solo Performance, the first time the category had recognized a woman.
The song itself is a tribute to a specific, unglamorous type: the “ruffneck,” a rough-edged, unpolished man she describes wanting over a smoother alternative, delivered in Lyte’s characteristically unhurried, conversational flow – she rarely rushes a bar, letting the words land with the same weight a slower reader gives a sentence. Producer Wolf and Lyte built the track around a sample-heavy, bass-forward beat typical of early-’90s East Coast hip-hop, functional rather than flashy, built to carry the vocal rather than compete with it.
The Grammy nomination lost, as first nominations in a newly created category for a historically excluded group often do, but the chart and sales numbers didn’t need the trophy to make the point: a woman could carry a rap single to Gold on her own name, on her own terms, delivered in her own voice. Greatest of All Time.
