Greatest of All Time!Written with Britney Spears in mind, passed on by her camp during a turbulent 2007, and handed to a rising Rihanna, who brought in Jay-Z and turned it into one of the decade's defining singles.
Songwriters The-Dream, Christopher “Tricky” Stewart, and Kuk Harrell wrote “Umbrella” with Britney Spears specifically in mind, intended for her 2007 album Blackout at a moment when Stewart has said he hoped a strong single could help steady a career going through a very public crisis. Spears’s team passed on it, reportedly feeling they already had enough tracks – and Spears herself, under a conservatorship that stripped her of most control over her own professional decisions, may never have had the chance to hear the song and weigh in either way.
Def Jam’s Jay-Z, overseeing Rihanna’s third album at the time, picked “Umbrella” up for her instead and added his own verse, reshaping a song built for one pop star’s comeback into the introduction of another artist’s imperial phase. The production – a stark, minor-key synth stutter under Rihanna’s cool, unhurried vocal – has almost nothing in common with the glossier dance-pop Spears’s camp would likely have paired it with; the song’s eventual stripped-down, percussive identity feels inseparable from the artist who actually recorded it, to the point that it’s difficult now to imagine it any other way. It topped charts in 19 countries, won Rihanna a Grammy for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration, and became the song that defined Good Girl Gone Bad’s commercial run.
Nothing against Spears, who was in the middle of a genuinely difficult year through no fault of her own – but “Umbrella” landing with an artist still building her reputation, rather than one looking to rescue hers, let the song become a statement of arrival instead of a comeback attempt. Sometimes the right song finds the right moment by accident.
Greatest of All Time. One pop star’s passed-on comeback single became another’s definitive hit.
