American composer and bandleader who built a disco arrangement out of the opening movement of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony. Credited as Walter Murphy & The Big Apple Band, "A Fifth of Beethoven" (1976) topped the Hot 100 and became one of the defining novelty crossovers of the disco era.
