“Life Goes On” is built the way a lot of durable pop singles are built: small, fast, and hard to argue with. It runs 2:41. It sits in C major, at a tempo of 80 beats per minute performed in double time, according to the song’s tempo and key data – which in plain terms means a bounce that feels quicker than the number suggests. Oliver Tree co-wrote it with Tanner Petulla and produced it with Getter, and it arrived on May 28, 2021 as the second single from the deluxe edition of his debut album Ugly Is Beautiful. The genre tags people attach to it – pop rock, pop rap, hip-hop – are less a contradiction than a description of the whole Oliver Tree project, which never picked one lane and got away with it.
The numbers say the approach worked. The song reached No. 26 on Billboard’s Global 200, No. 71 on the Hot 100, and No. 7 on Billboard’s rock songs chart, and No. 33 on the UK Singles Chart; by mid-June 2026 it had passed 700 million Spotify streams. What sells it is economy. There is no long build and no bridge that overstays – it states its idea, repeats it until it sticks, and leaves. That is also exactly why the melody survived being lifted onto a completely different piece of internet culture this month: a chorus this simple can be sung by anyone, or by an AI-generated polar bear.
The criticism is the flip side of the strength. A song this tightly engineered for repeat listening can feel more like a very good product than a personal statement, and the genre-blending is more about finish than surprise – nothing here sounds like it could not be a hit, which is the point, and also the ceiling. It is a better single than it is a defining artistic statement.
It is impossible to write about this song in September 2026 without acknowledging that Oliver Tree died on June 14, 2026, at 32, in a helicopter collision over Rio de Janeiro, and that “Life Goes On” returned to Spotify’s global chart at No. 139 the following day with 1.27 million streams. Music Times read that chart return as fans choosing this song, and this title, over Tree’s more-streamed collaboration “Miss You” – an interpretation, not a measured fact, but hard to hear any other way now. This review scores the record, not the loss.
7.6/10 – a lean, sticky, genre-blurring single that has proven sturdy enough to survive both a global hit run and a meme.
